Verhoeven’s mischievous sci-fi shoot-em-up has always divided opinion. Does it achieve a higher plane of satire by enthusiastically embracing the mercilessly right-wing doctrine of its source novel (by Robert Heinlein), or is it just another excuse for low-concept, hi-tech, CGI bloodshed on an epic scale?
