It Came from Kuchar
It Came from Kuchar

Twin brothers George Kuchar and Mike Kuchar were the joyous oddballs of the Underground Film movement of the 1960s, and are among the small handful of artists to emerge from that scene who have remained active into the 21st Century. Born and raised in the Bronx, the Kuchar Brothers grew up on a cinematic diet of Hollywood kitsch, and all manner of big screen potboilers informed their homemade 8-millimeter epics such as I Was A Teenage Rumpot and Hold Me While I'm Naked, which reflected Late Show

Lost Horizon

En route from war-ravaged China, a plane is hijacked and taken to Shangri-La, mythical Tibetan sanctuary of peace and personal fulfillment. The Italian Job (2003)
The Italian Job (2003)

Hollywood remake of the 1969 British classic with Mark Wahlberg playing master-thief Michael Crocker (Michael Caine's role in the original). The plan was flawless, the execution perfect. But the one thing Crocker didn't foresee was being double-crossed by one of the gang (Edward Norton). Several years later, the gangmembers have made new lives for themselves in the US; but Crocker cannot forget and, when the opportunity arises, he gathers together the crew for a revenge heist...

Saw
Saw

This genuinely scary low budget film was one of the surprise (but deserving) hits of 2004. The impressively nasty death scenes recall Dario Argento (one chilling sequence involving barbed wire evokes a scene from Suspiria). Just when the film appears to winding down into a conventional Hollywood horror film, a sudden, terrifying revelation leads the film into one of the darkest American film endings since Se7en.

Things We Lost in the Fire
Things We Lost in the Fire

The moving tale of a recently bereaved widow Audrey (Halle Berry) who takes in her husband's best friend, recovering heroin addict Jerry (Benicio Del Toro). After losing her husband to an act of neighbourhood violence, Audrey finds it hard to adapt to life again, unable to move on from the overwhelming grief she feels. Meeting Jerry, she realises that he could be the person to help her cope with her grief, and invites him to move in. As he begins to help Audrey turn her life around, Jerry finds that his own life is finally getting back on the rails. Danish director Susanne Bier gained international acclaim when she was nominated for an Oscar for 2006's After the Wedding, but before that she had strong ties to the hyper-realistic, documentary style of the Dogme 95 group. In her US debut, Bier effectively brings together her tendency towards soapy subject matter and her signature verite style, creating characters with a depth and a human fallibility rare in Hollywood.

The Replacement Killers
The Replacement Killers

Versatile Hong Kong box office giant Chow Yun-Fat makes a Hollywood splash as a Chinese hitman beholden to a drug kingpin (Tsang, in an interesting reversal of his Hong Kong crusty cop persona). The good news is that he's free after one hit; the bad news is that the drug lord wants revenge on a cop who killed his son--by killing the cop's son. A tough-talking passport forger creates a new identity for our hero, but they've soon got to fight their way out to stay alive. First-timer Fuqua provides eye-candy visuals but little of the melodrama of his Hong Kong forebear (and executive producer), John Woo.

The City
The City

Made for the 1939 New York World’s Fair (“The World of Tomorrow”), The City is a seminal documentary film distinguished for the organic integration of narration (scripted by city planner Lewis Mumford), cinematography (Ralph Steiner and Willard Van Dyke), and music (Aaron Copland). The score, arguably Copland’s highest achievement in film, was also his ticket to Hollywood; it has been called “an astonishing missing link not only in the genesis of Copland’s Americana style but in American music and cinema” by Mark Swed of The Los Angeles Times. As Copland created no suite from The City, the present marks the first recording of this music in its entirety other than the original film.
