The Italian Job (2003)

	The moving tale of a recently bereaved widow Audrey (Halle Berry) who takes in her husband's best friend, recovering heroin addict Jerry (Benicio Del Toro). After losing her husband to an act of neighbourhood violence, Audrey finds it hard to adapt to life again, unable to move on from the overwhelming grief she feels. Meeting Jerry, she realises that he could be the person to help her cope with her grief, and invites him to move in. As he begins to help Audrey turn her life around, Jerry finds that his own life is finally getting back on the rails. Danish director Susanne Bier gained international acclaim when she was nominated for an Oscar for 2006's After the Wedding, but before that she had strong ties to the hyper-realistic, documentary style of the Dogme 95 group. In her US debut, Bier effectively brings together her tendency towards soapy subject matter and her signature verite style, creating characters with a depth and a human fallibility rare in Hollywood.
